Consequent upon the merger of the two ex-states viz. Gangpur and Bonai with Orissa State on 1st January, 1948, a separate district was constituted and named after headquarters town “Sundargarh” of Gangpur Ex-state. The literal meaning of Sundargarh is beautiful fort. The district comprises of three Sub-divisions viz. Sundargarh, Panposh and Bonai. This district also consists of three territorial Forest Divisions namely Sundargarh, Rourkela and Bonai Forest Divisions.
The district of Sundargarh is situated in the North-western portion of Orissa State. It is bounded on the north by State Jharkhand, on the South by 11/22/22 District Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Deogarh, on the east by District Keonjhar of Orissa and on the west and north-west by district Raigarh of State Chhatisgarh. The district lies between 21035’N and 22032’N Latitude and between 830 32’ E and 850 22’ E Longitude. The total geographical area of the district is 9712 Sq km. The total forest area of the district is3989.07 Sq km, which is 41.07% of the total geographical area.

After reorganization of forest Department, Rourkela Forest Division was created with effect from 01.10.2003. The area of the Division extends over the entire area of Panposh Sub-division and portion of Bonai & Sundargarh Sadar Sub-division in Sundargarh district. It is situated between 21° 49’13” to 22° 29’11” N latitude and between 84°27’16” to 85° 7’11” E longitudes. It is bordering with Jharkhand State in the North, on the south by Bonai Forest Division & Bamra Wild Life Division, on the east by Bonai and in the west by Sundargarh Forest Division , Sundargarh.

The Rourkela Forest Division has geographical area of 2777.0 Sq km and the forest area of 1083.59903 Sq km. which accounts for 32.86% of the total geographical area of the forest division. Following are the distributions of forest areas under various types in Rourkela Forest Division. This Division covers 70 numbers of Reserve Forest Blocks, 06 numbers of Proposed Reserve Forest Blocks duly notified U/s 4 of O.F.A.-1972, 33 numbers of Demarcated Protected Forests, 123 numbers of UDPF and 35 numbers of duly notified Village Forests extending over the entire Panposh, part of Sundargarh & Bonai Sub-Division of Sundargarh District.

Forest Management

SAW MILL 2022:

There are 20 nos. of saw mills selected by the committee headed by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Odisha for rehabilitation. Out of 20 nos. of selected saw mills, license has been issued in favour of 8 nos. of saw mill owners. Out of 8 nos., 6 nos. of saw mill has already been rehabilitated at Industrial Estate Rajgangpur and Kalunga. The status of saw mill is as follows.

To meet the growing demand of Urban Population Rourkela and to implementing the Honorable Supreme Court Order the following Sawmills have been relocated.

Livelihood projects

Projects have been formulated for livelihood empowerment by SMPB and Ama Jungle Yojana(AJY) by installing Siali leaves plate manufacturing unit at Saleipalli of Banki Range and MFP (Harida, Bahada, Amla) processing unit at Bankhaman of Rajgangpur Range under IGA Cluster namely BanalaxmiSiali Cluster at Saleipali&Gangpur Mahua Cluster at Budham.
